A village by the Alfambra

Villastar lies just a few kilometres from Teruel, set in the valley of the river Alfambra and surrounded by open hills where cereal fields, almond trees and patches of pine alternate across the landscape. Its proximity to the provincial capital means many people pass along the road without stopping, catching only a glimpse of a line of houses arranged along the slope.

The municipality has around 560 inhabitants, and daily life still follows a rhythm shaped by farming seasons and the routines of a small rural community. This is not a place designed for tourism, nor somewhere people tend to arrive at by chance. Villastar makes more sense when seen in the context of its surroundings: the river, the cultivated terraces, and the network of paths linking farmhouses and fields.

San Miguel Arcángel and the village centre

The most visible landmark is the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel. Its tower rises above the rooftops and acts as a reference point when approaching from the road. Like many rural churches, the current building reflects different periods, the result of successive extensions and alterations over time. Inside, there are usually altarpieces and devotional objects of a modest kind, in keeping with the scale of the local community.

The village centre is compact and easy to walk through. Most houses have two storeys, often with stone bases, iron balconies and walls made of masonry or rammed earth. Some have been updated with modern materials, which is typical in places where homes remain in everyday use. The main square serves a practical purpose, as is common in Aragón: a meeting point, an open space, and the setting for local events throughout the year.

Just beyond the built-up area, the landscape opens out quickly. From the nearby hills, it becomes clear how Villastar sits within the Alfambra valley. On clear days, looking west, the terrain begins to hint at the mountain ranges that lead towards Albarracín.

Traces of an older past

Within the municipal area lies one of the most distinctive archaeological sites in the province. On several rocks in the surrounding countryside, commonly known as the Peña Escrita, inscriptions in the Celtiberian language have been carved into the stone. They are considered among the most extensive preserved on the Iberian Peninsula and are often referenced in studies of pre-Roman writing in the Ebro valley.

The site does not have the scale or built structures associated with larger archaeological locations. What you find instead are rock faces set within the natural landscape. That simplicity makes it easier to picture how the area may once have been used: the nearby river, natural routes between mountain ranges, and a territory that has long served as a passageway.

Paths through fields and pine woods

The area around Villastar is best explored on foot or by bicycle, following agricultural tracks that cross the fields and low hills. Not all routes are signposted, though many are regularly used for farm work, hunting or everyday walks by local residents.

The ravines that descend towards the Alfambra tend to hold more vegetation than the open hills. There you find poplars, shrubs and pockets of shade, which are particularly welcome in summer. These are generally short routes, better suited to a gentle walk than a demanding hike.

In autumn, it is common to see people searching for mushrooms in the nearby pine woods. This is a well-established practice in the area, though it requires some knowledge, or the company of someone who can distinguish between species.

Local calendar and everyday life

The main annual celebrations take place around San Miguel, at the end of September. During these days, many residents who live elsewhere return, and the village becomes noticeably livelier.

There are also summer festivities in August, aimed largely at those who spend part of their holidays here. These involve simple activities, open-air dances and shared meals that bring people into the square and streets during the warmer evenings.

Holy Week is marked in a more restrained way, reflecting the size of the community. The Good Friday procession passes through the centre of the village, following a route that connects its main streets.

Visiting Villastar

Villastar can be reached from Teruel in just a few minutes by following a local road along the Alfambra valley. It does not have extensive tourist infrastructure, and many visitors come on a short trip from the city or as part of a wider route through the river’s surroundings.

Anyone planning to explore the area on foot should bring water and comfortable footwear. If heading further along the tracks, a simple map or route guide can be useful.

The interest of Villastar lies less in a checklist of sights and more in its quiet landscape and the historical traces scattered across its territory. It is a place where the setting, rather than individual monuments, shapes the experience.
