Parking and timing

Drive 35 kilometres from Huesca on the A‑132, then turn onto the HU‑311. The road bends down to the village. Park in the centre if you can; spaces are limited and go fast, especially on weekends when everyone is heading to the castle.

This isn't a town. It's one street, some stone houses, and not much else. Everything here depends on the fortress up the hill.

What you actually come for: Castillo de Loarre

Follow the road that climbs from the village for a few minutes. Go early. The car park at the top is small.

The castle is 11th-century Romanesque, built under Sancho III. Its size is notable for the period. Thick walls, square towers. From the outside, it feels substantial, less restored than many others.

Inside, you'll find the church of Santa María, a crypt, and carved capitals. The visit isn't long—an hour or so—but it shows how a frontier fortress functioned.

Back in the village, there's the church of San Esteban. It has a Romanesque base with later changes. The bell tower is visible from most points.

A walk through takes fifteen minutes. Look for old doorways and coats of arms carved into stone facades. They're easy to miss.

Walks outside

The land around Loarre is dry open country: holm oaks, scrub, rounded hills.

A common path leads to the ermita de Santa Eulalia. From spots along this trail, you get a clean view of the castle without any modern clutter in sight.

For a longer hike, pico Liso sits higher in the sierra. It's a steady climb, not a casual walk. Bring water and allow time.

You might see photographers with tripods framing shots Ridley Scott used for Kingdom of Heaven. It happens.

Practical notes

In August during fiestas, it gets crowded and parking is problematic. Semana Santa brings sober processions through narrow streets. Some local product or Somontano wine events pop up; dates change year to year.

Final advice

If you're here for the castle—and most people are—arrive when it opens. By 10:30 AM coaches start rolling in. After seeing it, walk through Loarre village quickly. Then move on; your reason for stopping will be behind you on its ridge
