The white villages by region
Sierra de Cádiz: the classic route
Arcos de la Frontera, Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, Setenil de las Bodegas. The original White Villages route, among mountains, with bandit history and goat cheese.
Málaga and the Axarquía
Frigiliana (eternal candidate for most beautiful village), Casares, Mijas Pueblo. White villages with Mediterranean views, bougainvillea and that contrast of blue against lime.
The Alpujarras of Granada
Capileira, Bubión, Pampaneira. White villages with flat roofs (terraos) of Berber influence, among ravines of Sierra Nevada. Serrano ham and local wine.
Huelva and the Sierra de Aracena
Alájar, Aracena, Almonaster la Real. White villages but among chestnuts and cork oaks, not olive trees. The architecture of Iberian pork.
Tip: Lime reflects sunlight and can be dazzling. Bring sunglasses. Spring is the best season: mild temperatures and patios in bloom for the May competitions.
